Former World Champion Calls Out Canelo After KO Comeback Win: “Everybody Wants To See It”
An unbeaten two-division world champion is targeting a showdown with Canelo Alvarez.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is gearing up for a mega-fight against fellow pound-for-pound great Terence Crawford, with the pair set to lock horns on Saturday September 13 at an unconfirmed site in the United States.
Canelo became the undisputed super-middleweight champion for the second time in his career last month when he defeated former IBF champion William Scull via unanimous decision, albeit in an underwhelming twelve round contest in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
One man who has set his sights on a battle with the Mexican superstar is two-weight world champion Jermall Charlo, who made his long-awaited return to the ring last weekend with a sixth round stoppage victory over Thomas LaManna in Las Vegas.
Speaking in the post-fight press conference, Charlo admitted that he believes a showdown with Canelo would be the ‘best move’ for his career right now.
“I look at the step that I’m taking at this moment, I’m not overlooking anybody in the division. To be honest with you, at this moment, I think the best move for my career, I’m 35, and time is wasting, whatever y’all wanna call it, I’m still having fun in the sport, I still got a lot more fights to go, I think that I should just keep fighting and hopefully I can get the Canelo fight, I mean wouldn’t y’all wanna see that?”
Charlo, who is now campaigning at super-middleweight, made a comeback to the sport after an 18-month hiatus. His scheduled bout against Caleb Plant, which was expected to take place before the end of the year, now looks to have fallen through after ‘Sweet Hands’ suffered an upset defeat to Armando Reséndiz on the same card as Charlo’s return last weekend.
Canelo has already taken on one of the Charlo brothers during his career, having beaten Jermell by unanimous decision back in September 2023.
